Meta announced a deal with Overview Energy to source up to 1 gigawatt of “orbit-to-grid” space-based solar power to support its data centers, with an initial orbital demonstration planned for 2028 and commercial deliveries targeted for 2030. Meta also reserved up to 1 GW and 100 GWh of ultra-long-duration storage capacity through a partnership with Noon Energy and continues heavy AI-related capital spending (up to $135 billion planned this year). The move signals hyperscalers’ growing focus on alternative energy solutions for AI compute and could pressure supply-chain and energy-related suppliers; however, the technology remains unproven and faces cost, radiation and repair challenges, leaving near-term market impact uncertain.
