Wisconsin Sues Coinbase and Polymarket in Explosive Prediction Markets Crackdown
Wisconsin has filed suit against Coinbase, Polymarket, Kalshi, Robinhood and Crypto.com alleging their prediction-market “event contracts” constitute illegal gambling under state law. The case intensifies a federal–state clash with the CFTC, which treats such contracts as swaps under federal jurisdiction and has sued states including Arizona. A Wisconsin victory could force platforms to geofence services, reduce U.S. access to prediction markets and raise compliance costs, while a federal win could entrench CFTC oversight and legitimize these products. The ruling could materially affect crypto platforms and DeFi projects that offer event contracts, potentially dampening innovation and trading volumes in the space until legal clarity is reached.
