Why One Insurer Is Charging Half Price for Every Mile a Tesla Drives Itself

Insurtech company Lemonade has launched Lemonade Autonomous Car in Missouri, following earlier rollouts in Colorado and Indiana, providing Tesla drivers with a 50% discount on insurance for every mile driven using Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised technology. Standard pricing remains applicable only during human-driven segments. Lemonade management confirmed that the 50% price cut is driven entirely by internal machine-learning actuarial data indicating a significant reduction in accident risk when FSD is engaged, rather than serving as a promotional figure. This development provides one of the first major third-party actuarial validations of Tesla's autonomous driving safety claims. Lemonade noted that the autonomous insurance product has achieved approximately 70% higher new customer conversion rates compared to standard non-autonomous policies. With Lemonade's car insurance in-force premium reaching $239 million in Q2 2026 and revenue expanding 79.4% to $294.4 million, this underwriting innovation could accelerate consumer adoption of Tesla FSD by translating automated driving safety metrics into direct financial savings.
