White-hat security researchers have transferred 52.37 Bitcoin, worth over $4.4 million, to the Wyoming-based Crypto Recovery Trust following the Coldcard hardware wallet exploit. Confirmed on September 21, 2026, in block 967,948, the transfer represents roughly 2.8% of the total exploit losses, which exceed $100 million across more than 1,500 BTC drained. The vulnerability stemmed from a March 2021 firmware defect that used weak software-based randomness for seed phrase generation. Rescuers secured about 40% of the funds in the exploit's second wave and launched a claims portal directing victims to verify ownership.
