Vitalik Credits Bitcoin as Ethereum Eyes UTXO Model for 1,000x Scaling

Ethereum research is exploring a Bitcoin-inspired UTXO-style model to improve long-term scalability and reduce state growth, with Vitalik Buterin crediting Bitcoin’s Utreexo work as an influence. The article says Ethereum’s active state is expanding by about 100 GB per year, creating a major constraint on its goal of roughly 1,000x scaling. Native UTXOs could cut permanent payment-state usage by about 99.8%, shrinking an estimated 1 billion entries from roughly 100–150 GB down to around 300 MB. The proposal is experimental and would likely remain hybrid, preserving account-based smart contracts while shifting simpler transfers to lighter state classes. The piece also notes recursive STARK-based mempool aggregation could help keep bandwidth manageable as activity increases.
