Aerie Unveiled for Ethereum Post-Quantum Signatures Amid Debate Over Hash-Based Alternatives

Researchers from a16z crypto, LayerZero Labs, Carnegie Mellon University, and Imperial College London have unveiled Aerie, a lattice-based post-quantum signature aggregation system for Ethereum. Tested on a consumer-grade CPU, Aerie aggregates 32,768 Falcon signatures in 0.65 seconds—over 50,000 signatures per second—with verification taking 54 milliseconds, outperforming Ethereum's hash-based leanVM benchmarks by 29 times. However, Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin and Zcash cofounder Eli Ben Sasson have defended the network's planned hash-based architecture and STARK aggregation, citing potential mathematical vulnerabilities in lattice-based cryptography against artificial intelligence attacks.
