US appeals court blocks class actions against Tesla over self-driving claims

A U.S. appeals court has overturned orders granting class-action status to thousands of California Tesla owners suing over Full Self-Driving marketing claims. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that plaintiffs failed to show all buyers were exposed to the same statements, citing too many individualized questions about what customers saw before purchasing. The decision vacates three classes certified in 2025 covering vehicles bought since October 2016. While reducing Tesla's immediate exposure to collective damages, the underlying false advertising claims remain pending on an individual basis.
