Update Your Browser: Google Patches Chrome Flaw Hackers Were Already Using

Google has issued an urgent desktop update for its Chrome browser after confirming the active exploitation of a high-severity zero-day vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-85046. The flaw resides in Chrome's V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine as a type-confusion bug, which can trigger memory corruption and unexpected software execution. Google confirmed the vulnerability exists in the wild but has withheld specific technical exploitation details until a majority of users update to the patched version. The fix is rolled out in Chrome versions 152.0.7977.82 and 152.0.7977.83 for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems as part of a wider package comprising 12 security patches, including nine high-severity fixes. Security researcher Salvatore Gulizia discovered and reported the flaw on August 4, receiving a $1,000 bug bounty. While Google has not explicitly linked CVE-2026-85046 to digital asset theft, browser vulnerabilities remain a critical vector for attacks targeting cryptocurrency wallets, web extensions, and sensitive login sessions across decentralized finance ecosystems.
