Ukraine drones kill four in Russia, Moscow faces biggest attack in over a year

Ukraine mounted its largest overnight drone strike on Moscow in over a year, killing at least four people and prompting Russian authorities to report more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones downed in 24 hours. Moscow officials said air defences destroyed dozens of drones (81 aimed at Moscow since midnight), with damage near an oil refinery and several residential buildings; Sheremetyevo airport reported debris landed on its territory without damage. Kyiv said it can strike targets over 500 km from the border and is targeting Russian energy infrastructure (refineries, depots, pipelines). Market implications include a likely near-term boost to safe-haven assets such as gold (XAUUSD) and increased volatility in energy markets if strikes threaten Russian oil processing or logistics, potentially lifting oil prices and geopolitical risk premia. Investors should watch shifts in safe-haven flows, energy prices and volatility indicators as the situation escalates.
