U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.21%

Major U.S. stock benchmark indices closed slightly lower on Wednesday, pressured by broad weakness across the Healthcare, Consumer Services, and Consumer Goods sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.21% to close at 53,463.88 points, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.02% to end at 7,675.83 points, and the NASDAQ Composite retreated 0.08% to finish at 26,130.20 points. Decliners outnumbered advancers across both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. Performance within the Dow showed notable divergence. Honeywell International gained 2.31%, Caterpillar rose 1.31%, and Apple advanced 1.15%, providing downside support. However, declines in Nike, which slid 2.25% to five-year lows, alongside Merck falling 2.14% and IBM down 1.84%, pulled the index into negative territory. In broader equity markets, Arista Networks climbed 5.92%, while Moderna shed 5.77% and Eli Lilly fell 3.59%. In other financial markets, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell 1.55% to 15.21, and the US Dollar Index climbed 0.23% to 99.07. Commodity prices trended lower as December gold futures decreased 1.05% to $4,645.00 an ounce, while WTI crude oil declined 0.69% to settle at $81.79 per barrel.
