The U.S. National Debt Just Topped $40 Trillion. Here's What That Could Mean for Bitcoin.

The U.S. national debt recently surpassed the $40 trillion threshold as of August 2026, marking a more than doubling of the debt load since 2017. According to Congressional Budget Office projections, the 2026 deficit is expected to reach $1.9 trillion, or 5.8% of GDP, with public debt reaching 101% of GDP this year and climbing toward 120% by 2036. As debt service costs mount, government options to manage the obligations include economic growth, spending reductions, tax hikes, or currency debasement through inflation. While Bitcoin has experienced periodic volatility and its 24-month rolling correlation with global money supply recently decoupled, its fixed 21 million supply cap positions it as a long-term beneficiary should policymakers rely on inflationary measures. Fidelity Digital Assets research previously found that money supply expansion accounted for up to 87% of Bitcoin's price variation over a 15-year span. As fiat supply expands to service rising public liabilities, growing scarcity dynamics are projected to support Bitcoin's role as a macro inflation hedge.
