Tether is Killing Its Gold Stablecoin Experiment in 37 Days. Should Investors Worry?
Tether is shutting down Alloy, its gold-backed lending platform, on Sept. 17, ending a small experiment that allowed users to borrow aUSDT against Tether Gold (XAUT) collateral. Only five positions remain open, backed by about 194.41 XAUT worth roughly $850,000, while the platform’s total collateral was only $1.9 million at its June 30 attestation. The closure should have limited direct impact on XAUT holders because only 0.03% of the token’s 707,747 supply is tied up in Alloy. Tether Gold itself remains active and is still a $2.7 billion token, and recent whale flows suggest demand is holding up. The main market takeaway is that Tether is simplifying a niche product with minimal systemic impact, though borrowers still face a 0.25% exit fee and must repay before the deadline to retrieve collateral.
