Tesla's latest Gigafactory Texas facility expected to help speed Cybercab production

Tesla Inc. has commenced operations at its new battery cathode manufacturing plant located at Gigafactory Texas in Austin. CEO Elon Musk highlighted the facility as the only large-scale lithium battery cathode production site currently operating in the Americas. The plant processes key precursor materials including nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium hydroxide to produce high nickel-rich cathode active materials aimed at maximizing energy density and extending EV driving range. The operational startup is anticipated to significantly accelerate production of Tesla's proprietary 4680 battery cells. This increased battery supply will support the ramp-up of the purpose-built Cybercab robotaxi, alongside the Tesla Semi and Model Y. According to recent Environmental Protection Agency specifications, the upcoming Cybercab is projected to achieve a range of approximately 418 miles on a single charge. Job listings from Tesla indicate that the cathode facility represents a capital project valued at over $100 million. By localizing cathode processing within North America, Tesla aims to enhance supply chain resilience and lower long-term cell manufacturing costs amid growing industry competition.
