Tesla Solar Roof is on life support as it pivot to panels
Electrek reports Tesla has effectively deprioritized its high-profile Solar Roof in favor of conventional solar panels, highlighting a strategic product pivot that has market and reputational implications. The Solar Roof fell far short of Musk’s 2019 target (1,000 roofs/week), with roughly 3,000 systems installed through early 2023 and peak deployment of ~2.5 MW in Q2 2022 (~23 roofs/week). Tesla stopped reporting solar deployments in Q1 2024 and has shifted installations to third-party installers, creating customer-service and litigation risks. Tesla launched the TSP-420 panel (early 2026) with an 18-zone optimizer and announced an ambitious 100 GW/year U.S. manufacturing target—contrasted with current ~300 MW Buffalo capacity and a reported $2.9B equipment sourcing push. The move may improve unit economics and scale for Tesla Energy but leaves legacy Solar Roof customers exposed and raises questions about execution risk and future energy-segment revenue credibility.
