Tesla plans another Central Texas expansion in Mustang Ridge south of Austin

Tesla Inc. is further expanding its operational footprint in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area with a planned 538,720-square-foot distribution center in Mustang Ridge. According to recent state regulatory filings, construction on the leased office and warehouse facility is scheduled to commence in December with an estimated build-out cost of approximately $1.44 million. The site is located roughly 12 miles south of Tesla's headquarters at Gigafactory Texas, placing it adjacent to key automotive suppliers such as Xinquan Texas Automotive Interiors. The expansion aligns with Tesla's broader strategic investments in Central Texas, including a recently operational battery cathode plant to ramp up 4680 cell manufacturing for its newly launched Cybercab robotaxi, as well as chipmaking initiatives tied to the Terafab semiconductor project. CEO Elon Musk projects local headcount could expand to over 30,000 workers by 2028, up significantly from 16,506 employees recorded at year-end 2025. This infrastructure growth underscores Tesla's commitment to scaling vertical integration, localized supply chain logistics, and autonomous vehicle production capacity.
