Tesla is coming for Detroit's government fleet business

Tesla signed a master purchasing agreement with Sourcewell in December that gives it streamlined access to more than 50,000 US and Canadian public agencies (cities, school districts, state agencies). The deal lets Tesla offer cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks — and third-party modifications — under an open-ended, up-to-seven-year contract, challenging Ford and GM's longtime dominance in government fleets. Tesla currently sells fewer than 1% of its vehicles to public-sector customers (about 800 vehicles), but estimates a 1.5–2 million light-duty municipal-vehicle market. The move could boost demand as Tesla contends with a recent delivery miss and a roughly 50,000-unit inventory glut, though barriers include limited fleet financing/leasing, state direct-sales restrictions and immediate sales availability in only 30 states.
