Tesla Faces Optimus Production Bottlenecks Over Robot Hand Complexity
Tesla is encountering major manufacturing hurdles in scaling its Optimus humanoid robot, driven by assembly bottlenecks in the robot's hands. Each hand requires manual assembly of over 100 intricate parts, while touch-sensor reliability issues have forced production rework. Output has expanded tenfold from several dozen units weekly in the second quarter to several hundred per week by August 2026. However, the mechanical snags threaten Tesla's interim target of 1,000 units weekly by the end of 2026 and Elon Musk's long-term goal of 20,000 units per week. Early Optimus V3 models will be leased to select clients rather than sold.
