Tesla Completes AI5 Chip Tape-Out, Powering Next-Gen Autonomy and Optimus

Tesla has achieved a key hardware milestone with the completion of its AI5 chip tape-out on June 16. The development follows site preparation for Optimus robot production near Gigafactory Texas that began on June 11 and Elon Musk's June 15 comments highlighting the AI chip team's progress and the upcoming AI6 design. AI5 is designed to deliver roughly 40 times the performance of its predecessor with improved efficiency, enabling real-time on-device inference for self-driving vehicles, the Cybercab service, and mass-produced Optimus humanoid robots. Tesla is advancing the project through a vertically integrated approach, co-developing the Terafab facility with SpaceX while partnering with Samsung and TSMC for manufacturing.
