Tesla, Chinese Brands Lead Gartner Digital Index as AI Widens Gap

Gartner’s 2026 Digital Automaker Index underscores a widening technology gap in the auto industry, with Tesla retaining the No. 1 spot and Chinese EV makers continuing to dominate the top ranks. Tesla scored 82.7%, ahead of Nio, Xiaomi, XPeng and Li Auto, while US EV startups Rivian and Lucid placed sixth and seventh. The report is unfavorable for legacy automakers: no European legacy brand made the top 10, Mercedes-Benz was the highest-scoring European at 11th, and Volkswagen, BMW and Stellantis slipped further down the table. Gartner said the tougher methodology, which added AI as a standalone category and emphasized broad deployment across model lines, makes the gap more visible. Market-wise, the piece reinforces investor confidence in Tesla and leading Chinese EV companies as software/AI leaders, while highlighting competitive pressure on traditional automakers to accelerate digital transformation.
