Tata says India pollution board drops scrutiny of Apple iPhone parts plant

Tata Electronics said Tamil Nadu’s pollution control board has dropped its scrutiny of the company’s iPhone components plant after Tata addressed contamination concerns tied to wastewater discharge. The decision removes a near-term operational risk for a key Apple supplier in India and supports Apple’s efforts to diversify iPhone production away from China. Tata said independent lab testing and the board’s own recent water samples showed no contamination, and the company responded formally to the warning notice. The issue had raised shutdown fears after farmers complained that wastewater may have affected nearby wells. While the matter is now cleared, it highlights ongoing environmental and regulatory risks in Apple’s India supply chain, which has already faced prior disruptions including a 2024 fire at the same Hosur plant.
