Swiss Market Ends On Weak Note
The Swiss stock market reversed early gains on Wednesday, finishing moderately lower as cautious investor sentiment and macroeconomic uncertainties weighed on equities. The benchmark SMI index, which climbed to an intraday peak of 12,163.23 during morning trade, surrendered its advances and closed down 70.59 points, or 0.58%, at 12,015.72. The decline was primarily driven by weakening domestic confidence and broader global headwinds. A survey by UBS and the CFA Society revealed that the Swiss investor sentiment index slipped by 0.7 points month-over-month to 17.5 in May, retreating from April's two-and-a-half-year high of 18.2. Furthermore, trader caution intensified ahead of key economic data releases from the United States and lingering ambiguity over the Federal Reserve's future interest rate trajectory. Heavyweights and luxury names led the market downturn, with Lindt & Spruengli sliding around 3% and Richemont falling 1.52% amid takeover speculation following Bernard Arnault's personal stake purchase. Roche Holding, Nestle, and Zurich Insurance also dropped over 1%, overshadowing gains in select healthcare and industrial shares such as Straumann Holding.
