Swiss finance faces some awkward questions

Campaigners have forced a referendum in Switzerland on the Financial Centre Initiative, after collecting over 145,000 signatures (the threshold is 100,000). The proposal would require banks, insurers, pension funds and asset managers to align activities with international climate and biodiversity goals, including a ban on financing new coal, oil and gas projects. Swiss financial giants such as UBS, Zurich Insurance and Swiss Re could face constraints; industry groups warn the rules would duplicate existing measures and harm competitiveness and pension returns. The initiative must still be reviewed by government and parliament, with a national vote unlikely before next year. Markets may face reputational and capital-allocation implications for Swiss finance, but uncertainty and political framing around pensions could limit the measure’s chances.
