Surging Tanker Freight Rates Disrupt Crude Markets and Stoke Global Consumer Inflation

Record crude tanker shipping rates are stoking global consumer inflation and leaving heavy crude stranded across the Americas. Freight rates now account for more than 40% of delivered crude oil prices around $95 per barrel, up from 7% in 2025. Chartering a supertanker from the U.S. to Japan has reached $81 million ($40.50 per barrel), compared to $9.1 million last year, while daily tanker earnings have hit $1.3 million to $1.4 million. The prohibitive costs have depressed Canadian, Colombian, and Ecuadorian heavy crude prices by roughly $10 per barrel, deepening regional gluts while Asian refiners face severe margin compression.
