Sudan gold ban takes effect in Switzerland on Thursday
The Swiss Federal Council announced a comprehensive ban on the purchase and import of gold originating from Sudan, scheduled to take effect on September 10. In addition to import restrictions, the newly enacted measures strictly prohibit the export and sale of specific gold mining and extraction equipment to the African nation. This regulatory move aligns Switzerland's sanctions regime with similar measures adopted by the European Union earlier in July. The coordinated sanctions are designed to disrupt illicit revenue streams, following determinations by international authorities that Sudan's gold trade is actively being utilized to finance the ongoing military conflict in the region. By cutting off access to Swiss refining hubs and European markets, regulators aim to curtail the financial resources available to warring factions. The policy reinforces tightening global scrutiny over conflict commodities and supply chain traceability within the precious metals industry.
