Step aside Tesla, BYD: Japanese carmakers deepen their hold on India's auto market with hybrids

Indian consumers are favoring hybrid vehicles over battery EVs, strengthening the position of incumbent Japanese makers and muting opportunities for pure-play EV entrants like Tesla. Care Ratings and industry data show hybrids rising to 362,866 units in FY‑Mar 2026 (from 98,010 in FY‑Mar 2020) and are forecast to reach about 10% of India’s car sales by FY‑Mar 2027, while EVs are expected to be roughly 5%. Tesla has sold under 400 cars and BYD fewer than 7,000 in India since 2025, as hybrids offer fuel‑efficiency gains without charging infrastructure or resale‑value concerns. Major players — Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and others — are rolling out more hybrid models, likely preserving legacy automakers’ market share and slowing adoption of full EV platforms in India. The shift has implications for global EV makers’ revenue growth in the market and for investors tracking auto OEMs and suppliers tied to hybrid versus BEV production.
