Stacks announces next institution staking Bitcoin with STX

Stacks has announced the addition of another institutional participant to its self-custodial Bitcoin staking program ahead of its Genesis Bond launch in late August 2026. This development builds upon the platform's recent PoX-5 hard fork upgrade, which activated on July 29, 2026, alongside Fireblocks custody integration and the onboarding of UTXO Management as the inaugural institutional staker in late May. The staking mechanism enables institutional Bitcoin holders to lock BTC on Layer 1 using timelock scripts paired with STX tokens, avoiding custodial risk, lending, or rehypothecation. The mechanism targets a yield of approximately 3% APY denominated in BTC, funded via Proof-of-Transfer miner bids and paid across six-month intervals, with initial bootstrap capacity capped at 3,000 BTC. By providing native BTC-denominated yield without forfeiting coin custody, the protocol seeks to unlock dormant institutional Bitcoin capital and expand Layer 2/smart contract utility tied to Bitcoin Layer 1, potentially accelerating institutional engagement in decentralized finance.
