Square Expands Google Tie-up To Enable Food Orders Via Google Maps AI

Block’s Square expanded its partnership with Google to let U.S. food and beverage merchants receive orders through Google Maps’ conversational AI feature, Ask Maps. Square sellers that activate a Google Business Profile can surface in Ask Maps results, with menus, hours and location data syncing automatically from Square Dashboard. Customers can browse menus, customize orders and check out via Order by Cash App, with orders routed directly into existing Square POS and Kitchen Display System workflows. The move deepens Square’s commerce integration with Google and supports the broader Universal Commerce Protocol initiative for agentic commerce. While the announcement is strategic for long-term merchant discovery and order volume, the market reaction was muted to negative, with Block shares down 3.12% and Alphabet down 0.25% at the time of the report.
