SpaceX's first Starfall customer is European mission integrator Space Cargo

SpaceX's newly established Starfall orbital return business has signed European mission integrator Space Cargo as its inaugural commercial customer. Under the agreement, Space Cargo will fly an orbital reentry mission targeting 2028 aboard the first commercial launch of SpaceX's next-generation Starship rocket. The mission will utilize SpaceX's Starfall, an aluminum disk-shaped capsule equipped with a 10-foot heatshield engineered to return manufactured materials and scientific experiments safely to Earth. Space Cargo plans to integrate its proprietary 'BentoBox' system, capable of holding up to one ton of commercial cargo, primarily serving clients across biotechnology and life sciences. The emerging in-space manufacturing and microgravity research sectors offer high-margin opportunities, with demand driven by superior production conditions for pharmaceuticals and advanced materials. This agreement validates SpaceX's strategy to commercialize Starship's massive payload capacity while establishing competitive positioning against specialized reentry startups like Varda Space.
