SpaceX Nasdaq-100 rebalance: what the $15.5B to $22B passive buying event means for SPCX
SpaceX (SPCX) is scheduled to see its Nasdaq-100 weighting more than double from approximately 1.28% to 2.82% following the upcoming quarterly rebalance. This mechanical adjustment is projected to trigger between $15.5 billion and $22 billion in forced, programmatic buying from passive funds tracking the roughly $1.7 trillion benchmark index during Friday's closing cross, effective September 21, 2026. The increase in index weighting stems from the Nasdaq-100's float-cap rules following the release of over 1.2 billion shares after August lockup expirations, which significantly expanded the publicly tradable float. The surge in passive flows coincides with solid operational metrics, including Q2 2026 revenue of $7.81 billion (up 91.9% YoY) and multiple large-scale compute agreements exceeding $11 billion in annualized recurring revenue. Despite the massive liquidity influx, market analysts urge caution, noting that index inclusions can provide liquidity for pre-positioned institutional holders to distribute shares. With 2.3 billion restricted shares scheduled to unlock in October and November alongside Q3 earnings, the market will closely evaluate whether fundamental strength can absorb upcoming supply headwinds.
