Silver Leads Precious Metals Higher Ahead of Warsh as Gold

Silver took clear leadership across the precious metals complex ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole keynote address, climbing over 2.01% to break above the 70 level. In contrast, gold prices remained essentially flat while platinum gained 2.64%, accelerating the compression of the gold-silver ratio down to 65.14. The divergence is particularly noteworthy because gold has been among the most crowded long trades in CFTC positioning data, leaving it highly vulnerable to event risk surrounding central bank independence and monetary policy guidance. Meanwhile, silver and platinum have maintained separate bullish fundamentals, with silver supported by strong industrial demand linked to AI infrastructure and electronics, and platinum bolstered by South African supply bottlenecks. Market participants expect the post-speech price action to clarify whether silver's outperformance reflects an independent structural rally or pre-event positioning ahead of Fed commentary. In foreign exchange markets, price action remained relatively subdued, with the Australian dollar showing the greatest strength on domestic rate hike expectations while the Canadian dollar lagged.
