‘Shortcomings and failures’ could sink Aukus nuclear submarines plan, UK inquiry warns

A UK parliamentary defence committee warned that funding shortfalls and weak political leadership threaten delivery of the Aukus nuclear-submarine programme, raising execution risk for UK shipbuilding and allied suppliers. The report highlights chronically under-funded UK shipyards, a critically low submarine availability demonstrated when HMS Anson — the only attack-class submarine at sea during its February visit to Australia — was rapidly redeployed, and slipped timelines for a £200m Barrow-in-Furness uplift. Australia has pledged A$4.6bn and already sent nearly US$500m to bolster UK capacity, while also planning to buy 3–5 US Virginia-class boats as a stopgap. The inquiry’s findings increase political and execution uncertainty for defence contractors and the wider UK market, implying downside risk for UK-focused equities and the UK 100 index until funding and programme leadership are clarified.
