S&P 500 Will ‘Easily’ Top 8,000 Before Historic Crash, ‘Black Swan’ Fund Manager Says
Mark Spitznagel, founder and chief investment officer of 'black swan' hedge fund Universa Investments, has reiterated his dramatic market outlook, predicting the S&P 500 will easily surpass the 8,000 milestone in a final wave of euphoria before suffering a catastrophic 80% collapse. With the index climbing significantly over the past year to trade within 4% of his target level, the bullish portion of his dual-stage thesis has materialized amid strong market momentum. Spitznagel attributes the underlying vulnerability of the market to years of near-zero interest rate policy, arguing that sustained higher borrowing costs will eventually pop the equity bubble. He anticipates that the ensuing crash will force the Federal Reserve to aggressively restart quantitative easing and expand its balance sheet, which would ultimately reignite inflation. Despite his extreme long-term crash warning, prediction markets such as Kalshi currently price in a 65.4% probability that the benchmark index crosses 8,000 before 2027.
