Researchers Build First Working Post-Quantum Security Defense for Bitcoin's Lightning Network

Researchers have developed the first working post-quantum security framework for Bitcoin's Lightning Network. Led by Dr. Ahmet Kurt, teams from multiple American universities created the system using roughly 11,000 lines of code integrated into Rust-Lightning over three to four months. The dual-layer design combines existing classical cryptography with NIST-standardized post-quantum algorithms, specifically ML-DSA for digital signatures and ML-KEM for key exchange. Because the Lightning Network functions off-chain, the implementation operates independently without requiring changes or hard forks to Bitcoin's base layer, though official integration roadmaps remain unconfirmed.
