Post-Quantum Ethereum Signatures Now 6.6× Cheaper at 1.23M Gas

Researchers have achieved a significant efficiency breakthrough in post-quantum cryptography on Ethereum by reducing the gas cost of verifying ML-DSA-44 signatures to 1.23 million gas. This represents a 6.6-fold reduction compared to previous benchmarks of 8.09 million gas, bringing the blockchain closer to economically viable quantum resistance. The optimization complies with NIST's FIPS 204 standards and was achieved by overhauling key computations such as SHAKE-256 hashing and memory expansion routines. While Ethereum's existing ECDSA cryptographic framework remains vulnerable to theoretical future quantum threats, standard implementations without native post-quantum EVM opcodes require highly optimized smart contract execution. By drastically lowering computational overhead, this implementation paves the way for secure long-term account abstraction, smart contract wallets, high-value asset custody, and quantum-safe migration paths. Although the breakthrough does not immediately affect current network utility or short-term spot market pricing—with Ether trading down 2.64% at $2,393.82 at the time of the announcement—it strongly enhances Ethereum's fundamental long-term value narrative as a secure and resilient base layer.
