Pakistan Plans 2,000 MW Surplus Power Allocation for Bitcoin Mining and AI Data Centers

Pakistan plans to allocate approximately 2,000 megawatts of surplus electricity toward Bitcoin mining and AI data centers to generate foreign exchange revenue and potentially establish a sovereign Bitcoin reserve wallet. The power will come from coal-fired plants currently running at around 15% capacity. Specific mining locations, deployment timelines, and commercial partners remain unconfirmed. Authorities clarified that this power allocation remains entirely distinct from separate municipal sustainability and landfill methane capture initiatives, including the Rs5 billion ($17.86 million to $18 million) Mehmood Booti dumpsite project in Lahore aimed at carbon credit generation.
