Optimism and Unichain Propose Native Cross-Chain Ether Transfers

The Optimism Foundation and Unichain have proposed a protocol-level framework enabling native Ether transfers between OP Mainnet and Unichain. Introduced via a governance forum post, the initiative allows the two Layer 2 networks to validate cross-chain messages directly, eliminating reliance on third-party bridge validators. In its initial rollout, the functionality will strictly focus on native ETH transfers, excluding general ERC-20 tokens, shared balances, and unified liquidity pools. Implementation depends on Upgrade 20 and Upgrade 21 infrastructure, technical readiness, and community governance approval, with no formal launch date yet established.
