OpenAI Plans to Buy Google AI Chips to Expand Computing Capacity

OpenAI plans to purchase artificial intelligence chips from Alphabet Inc.'s Google to expand its computing capacity and diversify infrastructure, according to a report from The Information. Final terms of the potential transaction have not yet been established. The move represents a major validation for Google's Tensor Processing Units as alternatives to Nvidia Corp.'s market-dominant graphics processing units. OpenAI has historically been one of Nvidia's primary GPU buyers, previously began renting Google TPUs in June 2025, and is also collaborating with Broadcom Inc. on custom silicon dubbed Jalapeno.
