One Chip, One Datacenter: Meta and Panmnesia Extend Tight Coupling Beyond the Rack with CXL — Published by Invitation from Nature
Panmnesia, a fabless semiconductor company, and Meta Platforms have jointly proposed a next-generation artificial intelligence datacenter architecture published as an invited review in Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering. The architecture leverages Compute Express Link (CXL) open standards to enable an entire datacenter to operate with the coherence, latency predictability, and efficiency of a single chip. The proposed framework addresses cross-rack networking bottlenecks traditionally managed by Ethernet or InfiniBand. By integrating high-fan-out non-blocking switches, link acceleration units, and CXL-over-optics, round-trip latency is reduced by up to an order of magnitude from microseconds to hundreds of nanoseconds. The architecture increases the number of accelerators coordinated by a single CPU eightfold from two to sixteen, expanding the coherence domain to up to 960 accelerators. This architectural breakthrough carries significant positive implications for AI hyperscalers like Meta, enabling continuous training of trillion-parameter AI models with reduced risk of straggler-induced delays and hardware-level failure bottlenecks, while reducing vendor lock-in through open industry standards.
