Nuclear technology developer Oklo has formed an agreement with Meta Platforms to construct a dedicated nuclear power campus in south-central Ohio. Designed to support Meta's expanding regional data center infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads, the facility is planned to deliver 1.2 gigawatts of clean baseload power upon completion. Under current project timelines, pre-construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, followed by general construction between 2028 and 2029, with initial operations targeted around 2030. However, substantial hurdles remain, as Oklo's Aurora small modular reactor (SMR) technology is commercially unproven and currently awaiting formal licensing approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), leading analysts to view a later operational date as more realistic. Meta's agreement highlights an accelerating trend among tech hyperscalers seeking nuclear energy solutions to meet soaring AI power demand. This strategy mirrors similar moves across the tech sector, including Microsoft's 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy to restart generation at the Three Mile Island facility.
