Nvidia, Broadcom have 'broadest' ownership among chips; Micron, AMD surge: BofA

According to Bank of America's August Equity Strategy report, Nvidia and Broadcom maintain the broadest ownership among active U.S. fund managers within the semiconductor industry. Nvidia leads the group with an 82% institutional ownership rate, closely matched by Broadcom. Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Micron Technology have registered sharp increases in portfolio adoption, climbing to 51% and 50% ownership among active fund managers, respectively. From a sub-sector perspective, semiconductor positioning remains heavily concentrated in compute assets at 74%, memory at 43%, and equipment at 40%. The memory segment exhibited the most significant monthly momentum, expanding by 612 basis points relative to July, while semiconductor equipment ownership increased by 324 basis points. The data also highlights distinct divergence between investor types: hedge funds showed greater exposure to networking and design automation firms such as Synopsys and Arista Networks, whereas long-only fund managers maintained higher weights in established leaders like Marvell, NXP Semiconductors, KLA Corporation, Intel, and Qualcomm.
