Nvidia And OpenAI Discussing $500 Billion Data Center—Here's What We Know

Nvidia and OpenAI are reportedly discussing a massive AI infrastructure project in southern Ohio that could total more than $500 billion, including a proposed 10-gigawatt data center and substantial chip purchases. Nvidia may provide up to $250 billion in financing to help OpenAI lease the site, while OpenAI is also weighing up to $350 billion in chip purchases. If completed, the project would be the world’s largest data center by power capacity, dwarfing other announced AI buildouts and underscoring the scale of capital flowing into AI infrastructure. The project’s first phase could be completed by 2028 with about 800 megawatts of capacity. The report highlights rising competition among mega-cap tech firms for scarce power and compute, which is supportive for AI hardware demand but also raises execution, funding, and regulatory/power-allocation questions.
