NTSB Cites Missing Wind Data and Late Touchdown in Fatal Amazon Air Crash
An NTSB preliminary report revealed that an Amazon Air cargo flight touched down 3,750 feet past the runway threshold at 160 knots before overrunning the runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people and seriously injuring three. The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by contractor 21 Air, struck ground vehicles and caught fire on September 6. Investigators found that air traffic control failed to transmit required wind data, while the flight crew did not deploy speed brakes or thrust reversers despite excessive speed warnings. Amazon subsequently paused all operations with 21 Air.
