A Santa Fe, New Mexico jury found Meta Platforms liable for misleading consumers over data privacy practices connected to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. State District Judge Francis Mathew will determine the monetary penalties Meta must pay. The lawsuit, filed in 2021 by the state's attorney general, alleged deceptive statements regarding data control and third-party sharing involving up to 87 million users. New Mexico had opted out of a $16.7 billion multi-state settlement, previously securing $375 million in civil penalties and a $567 million teen mental health fund order against Meta.
