Netherlands stocks lower at close of trade; AEX down 0.04%

Netherlands stocks concluded trading slightly lower on Monday, with the benchmark AEX index declining 0.04% to close at 1,098.35. The slight downturn across the Amsterdam exchange was primarily driven by notable weakness in the Technology, Basic Materials, and Financials sectors. Overall market breadth leaned negative, with declining shares outpacing advancing issues by 52 to 41, while 11 closed unchanged, and the AEX Volatility Index remained flat at 21.09. Individual stock performance showed severe divergence between defensive and cyclical equities. The benchmark was heavily dragged down by semiconductor equipment manufacturers, with ASM International dropping 8.55%, BE Semiconductor falling 7.03%, and ASML Holding NV shedding 6.13%. Conversely, gains in defensive and publishing names helped cushion the broader index, led by Wolters Kluwer advancing 6.76%, Relx PLC gaining 5.38%, and Unilever PLC rising 3.39%. In broader financial markets, crude oil futures gained over 2.4% with Brent reaching $107.04 per barrel, while Gold futures fell 1.77% to $4,330.92 per ounce. Currency markets remained steady, with EUR/USD trading near 1.16.
