Musk's long-time backer is giving SpaceX stock to its investors
Venture capital firm Valor Equity Partners, led by long-time Elon Musk backer and SpaceX board member Antonio Gracias, has distributed approximately 8.5% of its SpaceX holdings directly to its limited partners instead of executing open-market cash sales. According to recent SEC regulatory filings, the distributed shares carry an estimated value of $8.5 billion. Entities controlled by Gracias initially held more than 500 million shares at the time of the company's initial public offering, second only to Elon Musk. Following this transfer, Valor retains ownership of over 460 million shares. The strategic decision to execute an in-kind share distribution offers potential tax advantages for Valor's limited partner investors while avoiding significant sell-side pressure on the open market. Liquidating a large tranche directly could have saturated market liquidity and exacerbated downside volatility for SpaceX shares, which have already fallen approximately 10% since the company's debut. The move demonstrates how major early-stage institutional backers are managing liquidity while mitigating immediate adverse price impact on the secondary market.
