MSCI Evaluates Broader Index Screens After Dropping Standalone Bitcoin Rule

MSCI is evaluating a broader screening framework for non-operating companies across its global equity indexes, replacing an earlier proposal that explicitly targeted crypto holdings. Under the revised plan, firms failing an initial operating-assets screen face disqualification if they fail four of five additional financial metrics. The change follows pushback from asset manager Strive and peers over ambiguities in the definition of operating assets and potential passive capital outflows from firms like Strategy and Metaplanet. Public consultation runs through September 30, 2026, with final results expected by October 16 ahead of the November 2026 review.
