Moscow Exchange prepares to start trading cryptocurrencies this year

The Moscow Exchange (MOEX) plans to begin testing cryptocurrency trading in early summer 2026 and aims to open full crypto trading to customers by the end of 2026, contingent on Russia passing its “On Digital Currency and Digital Rights” law (targeted by July 1, 2026). Initial trials will be limited to professional participants; later access may expand to retail under proposed rules (annual purchase limit ~$4,000). MOEX already trades Bitcoin futures and has launched altcoin indices and related futures, while major institutions like Sberbank are building regulated crypto services. Market impact: formal MOEX trading would broaden regulated on‑ramp and institutional liquidity for major coins (notably BTC and ETH), likely boosting domestic demand and legitimacy but tempered by purchase limits and phased rollout.
