Morgan Stanley Executive on Bitcoin: ‘We Are Still So Early on This Journey'
Morgan Stanley’s head of digital assets, Amy Oldenburg, framed bitcoin as an institutional opportunity still in its infancy, citing education gaps among advisors and clients as the main barrier to wider allocations. The firm’s Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) pulled in more than $100 million in its first week—entirely via self-directed accounts—while advisor uptake remains slow despite a 2–4% crypto allocation guideline. Morgan Stanley is training advisors, offering multiple product wrappers and custodial arrangements (Coinbase and BNY Mellon), and plans to roll out spot crypto trading on the wealth-management side. Oldenburg said banks holding bitcoin on their balance sheets is “not out of the question” if regulatory alignment improves. Overall the commentary signals measured institutional bullishness: products and flows are emerging, but meaningful advisor-led adoption and regulatory clarity are required for broader market impact.
