Microsoft's OpenClaw team takes on the personal assistant challenge

Microsoft’s internal team led by Omar Shahine is building “Project Lobster,” an OpenClaw-based, always-on personal-agent environment for Microsoft 365 that already has over 3,000 daily internal users as of May 1 (up from 100 the prior week). The effort aims to automate tasks across apps and act on users’ behalf, potentially increasing Microsoft 365 stickiness and functionality. However, the project faces significant security and governance hurdles — CEO Satya Nadella and Microsoft Defender teams have flagged OpenClaw’s persistent credentials and autonomous behavior as risky, and the team is focusing on enterprise hardening (separate Entra identities, mailboxes, Graph integration). Microsoft plans more visibility on Windows integration at its Build conference in June.
