Microsoft's GitHub was positioned to win the AI coding race. Outages got in the way

Microsoft’s GitHub unit has been hurt by repeated outages, a slow migration to Azure and executive turnover at a time when AI-assisted coding demand is surging. Reliability and a recent security incident (about 3,800 internal code libraries accessed) have driven some enterprise users to consider alternatives (Cisco, GitLab, Amazon, Atlassian, Google, Oracle) and allowed newer tools like Cursor and Anthropic’s Claude Code to gain share. GitHub Copilot still shows subscriber growth but faces usage limits, upcoming usage-based billing and temporary suspensions for new individual plans — moves that may spur churn. The operational challenges have weighed on Microsoft’s AI narrative and stock performance (down about 13% year-to-date), creating a near-term risk to investor sentiment if outages, pricing shifts or customer losses continue.
